Last night Freda, I and a few nieces and nephews met in Carson, California to see the opening of the movie Black Panther. I must admit, in the beginning, I didn’t give much more thought to this Marvel movie than I had the others in the past. But leading to the opening night I heard more commentary about the cast and others opinion of the movie from the trailers.
Black Panther, it seems, from the amount of publicity and the different opinions could be likened to the first time The Jackson 5 came on American Bandstand. In those days we didn’t spend much time inside on a Saturday afternoon, but when word spread of Black folk appearing on Dick Clarks American Bandstand we all headed for the nearest TV. We’d watch their performance then go back outside to continue playing.
The movie Black Panther was very refreshing! It’s hopefully the start of the next series of movies of high production quality featuring an all African American cast with the leading man as dark as I am with a love interest as dark or darker than him.
There are many other points I could speak on, but I’d suggest you go see this movie if you’d like a different perspective of Black life outside of what’s normally portrayed in the media and some movies. Although it is a movie adapted from a comic book, things seem to take on a different meaning when seen on the big screen.
The message(s) and images from this movie will definitely be remembered.
