My 4th oldest brother Roosevelt talks a bit about living “sustainably” in rural Alabama during a time when most people who lived sustainably didn’t have a choice, it was the only way to live. To live in those days most folks, especially Po’ black folk in some cases had to build their own homes, raise their produce for food, their livestock to slaughter, and many other things to make sure their lives were as comfortable as their abilities allowed. I, on the other hand, have chosen to live sustainably (to a certain extent) as I’ve built a small house in the woods of South Alabama.

The modern conveniences I’m building in the house are electricity provided by solar panels and a backup generator, cooking with propane and using a wood stove for heat and cooking, collecting rainwater to use for showering and flushing the toilet I’ve built in the house as opposed to an outhouse or a composting toilet. I get my water from my brother’s well and a natural spring. I’ve chosen a spot to manually drill a well for water at the house.
